When asked to write about my experience at the Mine, I struggled. Partially, I am a perfectionist so it takes me a little longer. Mostly I think it feels a bit daunting. It’s hard to think I could sum up my amazing experience in such a limited space.
I have struggled to encapsulate it all, even after explaining to family and friends many times. I struggle because I want to convey so much- the beautiful formation of new and unexpected friendships; the amazing individuals seeking impact and pushing me to better; the difficult and completely rewarding 9 months of feeling like I’m beating my head up against a wall at times; of the moments I felt overwhelmed at the crossroads of decision and the incredible feeling of pride when my team made a breakthrough; about the speakers both local and from around the country that inspired me to think and live differently; of the lives changed and the impact realized through our project; I want to tell you about Jeff and Taylor and the incredible leadership that has impacted me deeply and encouraged me to passionately chase after my dreams to alleviate poverty through business.
I want to share that the first time I realized the Mine had changed my brain (in a good way) was when I made a flowchart to figure out where I was going for vacation (see below). While it seems silly, I know the proof is in the pudding. The Mine taught me how to solve any problem with the right perspective and a pen and notepad. It also taught me to be brave, enduring and to always find a way to move forward.
Alas, I cannot share it all. Undoubtedly, there are anecdotes I will miss and crucial moments I will forget to tell. I can only encourage you to take part in a program I have considered life-changing.
So I have two words for those of you contemplating applying to the program: Do it. Actually, I have three words- Do it now. You will not regret it and the community will not forget the impact that you make. If you want to be challenged personally and professionally with some of Tulsa’s best and brightest then the Mine is for you.
